0:11 In this lesson, we're going to look at a few ways to keep your model clean from unnecessary geometry that may cause the model size to creep up without you knowing.
0:21 Starting with our model, the easiest way to keep unwanted or old geometry from the model is by purging.
0:28 For example, let’s start with adding a high poly tree to our model as if we were testing it out and then maybe changed our minds and didn’t want it after all and deleted it.
0:42 If we open our materials browser to the materials in the model, we can see the materials associated with the tree are still here.
0:50 The same is true if we locate the tree in the components browser.
0:57 To remove this hidden or straggler data, go to ‘Model Info / Statistics’ and then click on ‘Purged Unused’.

1:16 And now we can see it's gone now. And saving the file confirms that about 10 mb of size is also gone.
1:26 For this next part of the lesson, we’re going to need to do more work to clean the model than just purging alone can do.
1:34 Let’s pop out of our park model for a few mins and take a look at this building model that was exported from Revit.

1:48 ...even if optimized during the export process, often includes even the tiniest of model details, such as door knobs and hinges.
1:56 This particular model here has over a million polygons in it and is 94 mb in size so it's definitely too big to be used efficiently in a landscape-oriented model.
2:08 Especially if we have more than one building to import and reference.
2:14 The first thing we need to do here is manually gut the interior elements we know we’ll never see from the outside.
2:21 This can be tricky depending on how the model was built.
2:24 You neither want to delete a layer that has stuff we still need nor do we want to select and delete components one at a time.
2:32 The first step is to cut a section through the model to see what’s inside.
2:37 Then open up both ‘Layers’ and ‘Entity Info’ windows up next to each other.
2:42 When you select a group or component, it tell us which layer the definition is on in the ‘Entity Info’ panel.
2:49 Then we can judge if we think the layer is safe to delete in its entirety or not.
2:56 Let’s do the stairs first. After selecting the stairs, we can see its layer and reasonably assume no walls or anything ese is on it.
3:05 Then select and delete the layer making sure to choose ‘Delete Contents’ when prompted.
3:14 We’ll do this for a few other obvious things as well, like the handrails.
3:24 Then we can do the bathroom fixtures and furnishings.
3:36 It’s a good idea to move the section cut all the way through the model to ensure nothing hiding in a room that we could accidentally miss.
3:45 A bit deeper in reveals some more furnishings.
3:52 Let’s pause for a second here and check out ‘Model Info’ statistics to see where we’re at compared to the 1.2 million polygons we started with.
4:01 I see now we’re less than 150,000 so that’s a great start.
4:08 This is also a good point to introduce a handy extension called ‘CleanUp’ by ThomThom.
4:14 When we launch it, we have a bunch more settings to choose from on what to purge or not compared to the ‘Model Info’ panel.
4:22 Let’s see what this does by first making sure that we’re cleaning the entire model...
4:28 …and then making sure all the options except ‘Erase Duplicate Faces’ and ‘Merge Coplanar Faces’ are checked.
4:36 The two options we ignored for now could end up taking a really long time to process depending on the size of the model.
4:43 So if you want to use it on your own models, start by testing it on something smaller or selecting and cleaning parts of the building at a time vs the whole thing.
4:54 Now we can click ‘Cleanup’ at the bottom and wait a second for it to finish.
4:59 Then check the results. It looks like it did something so that’s good a sign.
5:05 Let’s go one step further and delete the remaining layers, but this time, we'll make sure to move the contents to ‘Layer 0’ instead of deleting like before as we still want this information to remain in the model.
5:19 We’ll finish by checking to make sure that there’s no hidden geometry still in the model somewhere that we missed.
5:30 Then doing one last purge from ‘Model Info’...and saving.
5:38 As you can see we’re now down to about 12 mb [from 94]. This is not bad and definitely now way more SketchUp-friendly.
